Soul Dining, Surry Hills, Sydney, Wednesday 4 March 2020

The March lunch was well attended with 38 members filling this restaurant to capacity who enjoyed tasting the exciting and delicious food cooked with Korean influences.
The tasting menu offered was seven courses which included a dessert to share.
On arrival the ladies were greeted with an aperitif that was a departure from the normal sparkling.
A 2018 Fiano from Dodgy Brothers Wines = Juxtaposed ‘Bigger Boat’. This wine was enjoyed as it was different and an introduction to a new grape variety for some attendees.
The menu commenced with :

Kingfish in Kimchi Water – White kimchi, avocado, soybean paste
Wagyu Tartare – Singo pear, egg yolk, chilli, pickled radish, seaweed crackling

Wagyu Tartare

The Kingfish was fresh and melted in the mouth.
Tartare can be challenging for some but the freshness of the produce will always win. This dish was served to be eaten with nori flash fried in rice flour.

Kim’s Eggplant – tomato jam, anchovy paste, parmesan
Fried Corn Riblets – garlic butter, pistachio, creme fraiche

Kim’s Eggplant dish

The eggplant dish was very interesting, a marriage of slightly Japanese and Italian, miso base and the parmesan topping gave it a real boost.
The crunchy corn riblets were visually appealing and very tasty.
Next up on the tasting menu was :
Char grilled octopus – potato, chilli sauce, aioli, dill
Barbecue Beef Short rib – galbi glaze, potato pave

Both dishes were served very tender and the beef just melted in the mouth.

The shared dessert best described as a pannacotta style.

The wines served with the menu were :
White – 2016 Billy Button ‘The Delinquent’ Verduzzo SA
Red – 2014 Boutinot ‘Les Coeaux’ France
Interesting grape varieties to try – fiano and verduzzo and made for excellent wine and food matching.
Comments on the food “the food was nothing like I thought of Korean cuisine. I thoroughly enjoyed this modern Korean food”.
“Definitely the best I have been to in the last year with SLWFS”. “Absolutely delicious – my all time favourite loved it”.

Delicious food, attentive staff and great atmosphere was the consensus for the lunch.
